Author:

“Julie Morey is originally from a nice suburb in Northern California complete with a white picket fence. Her parents are still shaking their heads and wondering what they did wrong. They make sure to send her one guilt inducing e-mail a month about how it is time to ‘stop traveling and return to reality.’ She politely ignores them.”

Morey writes more about her travel adventures on her blog.

Description:

“What does one do when they've suffered a bad break up, and are trying to ‘find’ themselves, but aren't quite ready to deal with reality?”

Julie Morey answered this question by spending seven months traveling Southeast Asia in search of herself.

Appraisal:

Travel narratives are never about just the travel. If a reader desires information about travel destinations, guidebooks and their internet equivalents do a better and much more comprehensive job. What a narrative gives that a guidebook can’t is the personal touch. What did this specific traveler experience and get out of their trip? What were they looking for? What did they actually find? It might be adventure, a better understanding of other cultures, escape (even if temporary), or a better understanding of themselves. Travel, Sex, and Train Wrecks has all of these.

Morey’s writing voice is informal, helping the reader feel like they’re a friend tagging along on her adventures. However, this sometimes went a bit too far. One example being her overuse of the word ever, as in “… the absolute best breakfast joint —Ever.” Still, a fun read that should appeal to fans of travel narratives, especially women who have a thing for guys with accents.

FYI:

Adult language and content.

Format/Typo Issues:

A small number of typos, grammar errors, and other proofing and copy editing miscues.

Rating: **** Four stars

I never had sex while on vacation, until after I got married, and that doesn't count. I just thought I'd share, for no reason in particular, just saying.

My passport expired, too.

I wonder how you wife would feel to hear she doesn't count? :)

Ouch! It's a good thing my secret is safe among a select few million internet viewers.

She's number one on my count.

Ha! Good save, you think?

I think you're safe. As long as she never finds out.
